SECURITY

Online Banking Security

One Bank of Tennessee is committed to making online banking safe and secure to provide peace of mind when you access your account information.

Overview

Online banking uses several different methods to protect your information. All information within online banking uses the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol for transferring data. SSL is encryption that creates a secure environment for information transferred between your browser and One Bank of Tennessee. To help protect your privacy while using the service, we will sign you out of the online banking service after 20 minutes of inactivity.

At a high level, SSL uses public key cryptography to secure transmissions over the Internet. In practice, your browser will send a message via SSL to the bank’s server. The bank responds by sending a certificate, which contains the bank’s public key. Your browser authenticates the certificate (agrees that the server is One Bank of Tennessee’s), then generates a random session key to encrypt data between your browser and the bank’s server. This session key is encrypted using the bank’s public key and sent back to the server. The bank decrypts this message using its private key and then uses the session key for the remainder of the communication.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protects data in three key ways:

  • Authentication ensures that you are communicating with the correct server. This prevents another device from impersonating One Bank of Tennessee.
  • Encryption scrambles transferred data.
  • Data integrity verifies that the information you sent to One Bank of Tennessee wasn’t altered during the transfer. The system detects if data was added or deleted after you sent the message. If any tampering has occurred, the connection is dropped.

One Bank of Tennessee requires customers to have an additional layer of security when using Internet-based bank products. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) provides guidance for online banking authentication methods. These methods ensure the security of our customers’ personal and financial information.

What is Enhanced Security?

Enhanced Security is a free and easy way to help verify that it is you logging into your One Bank of Tennessee online banking account. This login feature confirms that you are accessing your One Bank of Tennessee online accounts via a device that you previously authorized.

This feature requires two methods to identify whether you are the correct user accessing your online accounts. The first method is your user ID and password and the second is a code verification sent via text or e-mail.

What if I access Online Banking from more than one device?

More than one trusted device can be added to bypass the challenge questions upon subsequent logins.

The Enhanced Security feature logs an encrypted device identifier when you mark the device as trusted.

If your device’s operating system or browser is updated, you may be required to enter your Challenge Questions again.

Identity Theft

Identity theft is a problem consumers think about more today with the increased use of online banking, online purchases, and debit cards. With the increased use of electronics and technology, online banking can actually help you prevent identity theft.

A recent study by the Better Business Bureau shows that the average loss from identity theft via a consumer using online banking was $511. The average loss for a consumer relying only on paper statements was $4,543. By reviewing your account transactions throughout the month, instead of waiting on monthly statements, you can take an active stance to prevent identity theft from happening to you.

One Bank of Tennessee offers e-statements. You can sign up for e-statements by filling out the application after you log in to your online banking account. If you have any questions, please contact a One Bank of Tennessee representative.

  • Do not give out account information over the phone unless you initiate the phone call. If a One Bank representative calls you, you can call the representative back at (931) 528-5441.
  • Review your account transactions throughout the month, and look at your statement monthly for unauthorized transactions. Contact One Bank immediately to report suspicious transactions on your bank account.
  • Convert your monthly statements from paper to electronic to decrease identity theft through the mail.
  • Do not choose PINs associated with personal information such as birth dates or anniversaries.
  • Use the Secure Message Center to contact the Bank concerning confidential matters instead of sending an email.
